My wife and I were very excited to become pregnant with our first child, only to experience a miscarriage after 7 weeks of pregnancy in September of 2007. We became pregnant three months later and were cautiously optimistic about the pregnancy. My wife began experiencing complications at 7 weeks and was put on bed rest through 10 weeks, when it seemed like things were under control. At about 17 weeks, the AFP test came back positive for trisomy 18. After an ultrasound and amniocentesis, at 20 weeks, it was determined that our baby had triploidy – not just one chromosome that had tripled, but all. We were told that our child was a boy and decided to name him Dustin when we discovered the name meant “brave warrior”. After 36 weeks of pregnancy, our son, Dustin Christopher, was still birthed on July 22, 2008. He was truly our little fighter, and we were thankful and felt blessed to be able to hold him in our arms.
