OC Walk to Remember – 2009
Thank you to everyone who participated in the 2009 OC Walk to Remember at UC Irvine on October 10th. We raised $29,000 for local support groups and hospitals. Thousands of families will benefit from your support!
The OC Walk to Remember is a 5K walk, done in remembrance of all the babies lost to miscarriage and pregnancy and infant loss of any kind. The walk was preceded by a memorial service, where each baby’s name was read. No baby should ever be forgotten.
Proceeds from the walk benefit the national SHARE Pregnancy and Infant Loss Support organization,as well as several Orange County hospitals and support groups:
St. Joseph Perinatal Hospice, which is dedicated to supporting parents who continue a pregnancy after their baby is diagnosed with a life-threatening condition, provides nurses, social workers, music therapy, chaplain services, and many other support resources. They are there for the parents from diagnosis through the bereavement process, and the walk proceeds will help support those programs.
The Guild for Infant Survival Orange County is dedicated to serving parents and families, educating the public and professionals, and raising funds to support medical research in an attempt to eradicate Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). GISOC was established in 1975 to support families that have experienced the death of a baby to SIDS. The non-profit GISOC is the only Orange County peer support group for SIDS families.
Empty Arms support group at Saddleback Church is dedicated to providing care, council and encouragement in a Christian setting to parents who have suffered through the death of their baby due to miscarriage, stillbirth and infant death.
Healing Hearts SHARE support group Healing Hearts is a network of grieving families who have experienced the death of a baby through miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, stillbirth, neonatal loss including Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and for parents who had a much wanted pregnancy but due to medical problems were unable to continue pregnancy.
The funds also benefit the following hospitals. Previous donations have been used to fund the memory box programs; train nurses, doctors, and social workers about perinatal death; buy cameras and photo printers; and more.
• Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC)
• St. Jude Medical Center
• Saddleback Memorial Medical Center
• AHMC Anaheim Regional
• UCI Medical Center
• Western Medical Center
• Mission Hospital
• Kaiser Permanente (Irvine and Anaheim locations)
Several hospitals and support groups will receive donations of books of inspiration and support after the loss of a baby. A collection of books will be given to each hospital’s labor and delivery unit and available to mothers, fathers and other family members following the death of a baby.
The SHARE Pregnancy and Infant Loss Support organization serves parents around the country those whose lives are touched by the tragic death of a baby through early pregnancy loss, stillbirth, or in the first few months of life. The proceeds will help support their mission of helping families around the country.
